Gunawuna Jungai Limited is pleased to announce a generous $5,000 sponsorship from Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) for the Doomadgee United Rugby League Football Team.
This critical funding will directly assist with the team’s ongoing expenses as they prepare to compete in the 2026 Gulf Cluster Rugby League competition.
The financial support provided by CEQ arrives at a pivotal moment for the local club. By helping to cover essential operational costs such as travel, equipment, and match fees, the sponsorship ensures the players have the necessary resources to participate fully in the upcoming season.
Rugby league plays a vital role in remote communities, offering a positive outlet for physical activity, fostering community connection, and developing strong leadership skills among young adults.
Preston Johnny, the Founder of Doomadgee United FC, noted the importance of corporate partnerships in keeping grassroots sports alive in regional areas.
“I founded the club through my work on justice reinvestment, to get people into sport and to keep them on a good path,” he said.
According to Mr Johnny, sports and other programs have the potential to keep people from remote communities positively engaged and can reduce their chances of entering the prison system.
“This donation is helping Doomadgee United Football Club with the costs of jerseys, travel, and more,” he said.
“They’re really keen to play and compete and we thank CEQ for their support.”
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to community development and the empowerment of local youth through sport.
CEQ’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Dykes, expressed the organisation’s dedication to supporting meaningful local initiatives.
“Community Enterprise Queensland is proud to support Doomadgee Rugby League, recognising the important role sport plays in strengthening community connection, wellbeing and opportunity particularly for young people,” Mr Dykes said.
“Rugby League in Doomadgee brings people together, promotes healthy lifestyles and creates a strong sense of pride and belonging – values that CEQ shares with the community.
“Supporting Doomadgee Rugby League is also about encouraging broader economic and social participation. Local sporting clubs create opportunities for leadership, volunteering, skill development and local engagement, all of which contribute to a stronger, more resilient community.
“CEQ values partnerships that are grounded in respect, community leadership and long term benefit. By supporting local sport, CEQ reinforces its role not just as a service provider, but as a committed community partner invested in the social and cultural strengths of Doomadgee.”
The 2026 Gulf Cluster Rugby League competition brings together teams from across the region, providing a highly anticipated sporting event for players and supporters alike.
With CEQ’s backing, Doomadgee United FC is well-positioned to make a strong showing this year.
