The Board of Gunawuna Jungai has proudly announced the appointment of Massimo Zaini as Chief Executive Officer, following the departure of outgoing CEO Kieran Smith at the end of 2025.
The Board extended its sincere appreciation to Mr Smith for his leadership and contribution to the organisation, acknowledging his commitment and service during his tenure.
Mr Zaini brings more than a decade of experience leading multi-million-dollar programs across multiple remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including at Gunawuna Jungai in Doomadgee, following a distinguished 20-year career in local government.
Board Chair Athol Walden said the appointment reflected the Board’s confidence in Mr Zaini’s capability to lead the organisation into its next chapter.
“Massimo brings exceptional experience, strong governance knowledge and a deep understanding of community-led service delivery,” Mr Walden said.
“The Board is confident he is the right person to lead Gunawuna Jungai forward.”
Outgoing CEO Kieran Smith congratulated Mr Zaini on his appointment.
“I am proud of the work achieved during my time at Gunawuna Jungai and confident the organisation is in capable hands.,” Mr Smith said.
“I wish Massimo and the team every success as they continue to support the community.”
Mr Zaini said he was honoured by the Board’s trust and committed to working closely with the community.
“Gunawuna Jungai has a strong foundation and a vital role within community,” Mr Zaini said.
“We have built significant community support in Doomadgee, along with confidence from government agencies and philanthropic partners who see the impact of our work and want to be part of it. I look forward to building on this momentum, strengthening partnerships and delivering measurable outcomes for families and future generations.”
