National Agreement – Coalition of Peaks

This is the first in a series of videos explaining the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. This video introduces the Coalition of Peaks.

Gunawuna Jungai is proud to be an organisation formed under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap to represent Doomadgee, and while they will work hand in hand with the Government, their responsibility will always be back to the Doomadgee Community.

The National Agreement on Closing the Gap, which came into effect on 27 July 2020, outlines how the Coalition of Peaks and governments will work together to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Coalition of Peaks came together to change the way Australian governments work with First Nations people.

It is made up of over 50 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled peak and member organisations, meaning they work for and are accountable to communities, not governments.

They share in the belief that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should have a meaningful say on policies and programs that impact them through formal partnerships with all levels of Australian governments.

For decades, the organisations involved in the Coalition of Peaks have worked with their communities on matters such as healthcare, early childhood, education, land rights, and legal services.

They are united in their efforts in improving the lives of First Nations people and communities.
